What Does a DOT Exam Include?

During or before your DOT physical, you’ll be asked to fill out a Medical Examination Report form detailing your health history, such as high blood pressure, a neurological disorder, kidney disease, chronic pain, and so forth. Accuracy is essential to avoid having your certificate revoked. Next, our Certified Medical Examiner (CME) will review your medical history, discuss health conditions, and conduct a CDL physical exam, including:

  • Vital signs (blood pressure, heart rate, etc.) and overall fitness
  • Vision and hearing tests
  • Examining the mouth, throat, lungs and chest
  • Balance, reflexes and speech
  • Back, spine, and nervous system
  • Urine test for glucose levels

How Quickly Can You Get Your DOT Medical Certification?

If you meet all requirements, your DOT medical card will be issued the same day. If more information is needed, the exam may be paused until documentation is received. Keep in mind that your CDL depends on a valid DOT medical card.

What to Bring to Your DOT Physical

In general, the DOT physical lasts 30-45 minutes

  • A valid driver’s license
  • A list of current medications, including dosages & doctors' names
  • List of past surgeries and medical conditions
  • List of any allergies
  • Relevant medical records and history, such as surgeries, conditions, allergies, etc.
  • Any corrective lenses or hearing aids you use while driving

Additionally,

  • If you have diabetes: recent blood sugar readings and Hgb A1C results
  • Heart issues: A cardiologist’s letter stating you’re safe to drive and recent test results (e.g., stress test, ECHO)
  • Neurological conditions: A neurologist’s letter for conditions like seizures or strokes
  • Sleep apnea: 90 days of CPAP machine data

If you meet all requirements, your DOT medical card will be issued the same day. If more information is needed, the exam may be paused until documentation is received. Keep in mind that your CDL depends on a valid DOT medical card.
